Well done Elly, and good luck for the games ahead.

FRANCES MACKAY ARTICLE (14 Jan 12)

This article was in the Press dated 14 Jan 12, and is by sports reporter Matt Richens

Women's cricket still slips beneath most radars, but it's hard to imagine such a talented cricketer as Frances Mackay being as anonymous if she were a bloke.

Mackay, 21, has been floating around the domestic scene since 2007 but last year leapt to prominence with the most runs in the women's one-day competition and the best bowling average and economy rate in the Twenty20s.

The hard-hitting batter and accurate offspinner has carried on the same path this season.

She credits improved fitness and a five-week stint at New Zealand Cricket's academy at Lincoln for her continued form as well as feeling more comfortable and confident in her game.

Mackay leads both the 50-over and Twenty20 competitions' MVP contest and will no doubt be a key player in today's 50-over final and tomorrow's T20 finale against the Auckland Hearts.

She averages a whopping 75.67 in the one-day game this season, has a bowling average of 20.43 and an economy of 3.11.

For the uninitiated, those numbers are spectacular and her T20 figures are just as impressive. She's going for just 4.86 runs an over in the shortest form of the game and averages 48 with the bat.

Of course, she doesn't have to face her own bowlers – the best lineup in the country – and few would argue the depth in women's domestic cricket is well off what it is in the men's game but Mackay's figures remain phenomenal.

She's a bit uncomfortable over comparisons with Black Cap all-rounder Daniel Vettori but Mackay has the ability to dominate women's matches as Vettori does in the men's game.

More important than any of that for the student is performing well today and tomorrow for the Magicians and helping the side to second straight titles in both forms of the game.

"This is a massive weekend," she said.

"Everyone wants to do well in every game obviously, but this would be a big weekend to do it for the team."

Mackay's always had the ability, but it's her belief that has kicked in recently, coach Stephen Cunis said.

"Frank used to be so caught up in not going out," he said. "She could bat for 50 overs and score 65 not out.

"She'd hit the ball hard, as hard as anyone, but was probably too worried about getting out."

Cunis, with the Canterbury side, and White Ferns coach Gary Stead with the national side have both worked on Mackay's confidence and encouraged her to back herself with bat in hand.

"If she bats for 30 overs or so and she's on," Cunis said, "Frank is the type of batter who could score 140."

Mackay said it was as simple as relaxing and backing her ability.

"I think I thought about it too much, paralysis-by-analysis type of thing," she said.

"Now I have a game that I'm happy and comfortable with and that works really, really well for me," Mackay said.

LPWCC CLUB TWENTY/20 CHAMPIONS (09 Jan 12)

Saturday saw the climax of the Club Twenty/20 competition, and the first title under the reign of Michael Parlane (right). Playing Marist-Harewood in the final game Ben Ward hitting the winning runs with two balls to go leaving us top of the table heading off Marist and East Shirley.

Here is the article from the Press (09 Jan 12)

--------------------------------------------------------

Lancaster Park-Woolston's Ben Ward couldn't have picked a better time to clear the ropes on Saturday.

The wicket-keeper batsman from Ashburton scored 64 not out and the final blow secured the Metropolitan Twenty20 club title for his team on Saturday.

Lancaster Park-Woolston was the only unbeaten team through the four completed rounds, but with St Albans having already wrapped up their third win, and watching nervously from the sidelines, LPW needed to beat Marist-Harewood on Saturday afternoon to avoid sharing the title.

Chasing Marist-Harewood's 136-9, Ward needed to hit four runs off the final two balls to secure victory, which he did, with a timely six.

Skipper Michael Davidson was the hero in the morning round, scoring 79 not out as his side narrowly snuck past Old Boys-Collegians to notch up their victory.

East Shirley was the other team to win both their games, but that was only enough to lift them to third-equal with Riccarton, Sydenham and Burnside.

GENEROUS DONATIONS HELP LPWCC (22 Nov 11)

We have recently been the fortunate recepients of cash donations from two sources. Firstly the Queen St Cricket Club based in Auckland raised money to help cricket in Canterbury due to the earthquake and we were deemed the club most in need. We thank them for their donation of over $5000.

Secondly the Notts County Cricket Club with whom we have a long association dedicated one particular day in their recent season where they asked all clubs in their league to donate one pound per player. This gesture has resulted in a donation to LPCC of over $3000.

We thank both these organisations and appreciate the support we have received.

MARIA FAHEY ANNOUNCES HER RETIREMENT (08 FEB 11)

Club stalwart Maria Fahey today announced her retirement from cricket.

The top order bat has had a distinguished career for LPW, Canterbury and New Zealand, but after battling with illness has decided to give the game away.

We hope Maria won't be lost to LPW and hope to see her in some capacity in the future.

Here is an article from the Press (Matt Richens 08/02/11)

International Maria Fahey has ended her cricket career at just 26, but reflects positively on her 17 years in the game.

Fahey, originally from Timaru, told Canterbury Magicians coach Stephen Cunis she was about to retire on Friday, a day before the domestic Twenty20 final.

She then top scored in the match with a typically resilient 41 to complete the Magicians' second final win in six days and take her personal domestic trophy count to five.

Fahey first played for Canterbury, against England, as a 15-year-old and represented New Zealand 64 times across the three formats, since making her debut in November 2003.

That match, in India, was one of only two tests Fahey played as the format in the women's game is now all but extinct.

After batting more than an hour for seven in the first innings, the then 19-year-old opener was a key cog in saving the game for the White Ferns and her second innings knock announced her arrival on the world scene.

In front of 20,000 fans, she batted nearly seven hours across two days, faced 303 balls and finished 60 not out to save the game for the White Ferns.

She laughs as she recalls her one-day debut four days later.

"It wasn't the best start," she said.

Fahey was given out lbw by a local umpire on the first ball of her first one-day international.

"I got a bit of ... an interesting decision, you could say.

"It was a pretty bad getting out first ball of your first game because you're wondering if you're going to get picked again."

Fahey was left out of the second match then came back with a vengeance.

She followed her first baller up with scores of 52, 91 and 66 to finish the series averaging 52.25 and was New Zealand's top run scorer for the series.

From there she was a consistent member of the White Ferns until illness threatened to end her career.

When she was run down, Fahey caught a virus and her health deteriorated.

It was later revealed the fit, previously healthy top-level sportswoman had myalgic encephalopathy, or chronic fatigue syndrome.

She spent hours in bed, up to 23 a day at times and was told she would never play sport again.

"That was something I just didn't want to accept," she said.

She worked hard, bit by bit, and re-found her fitness and form and was again picked for the White Ferns.

But working fulltime and playing three days a week has become too much and she decided now was the right time for a permanent rest.

"I still love cricket, but with the illness I just haven't been able to train to the level and with the same intensity that I would like and need to be performing at the best of my ability," she said.

Fahey said ending her career and leaving the successful Magicians team was a decision not taken lightly, but was made easier by the fact she knew they were in good hands.

She said she was keen to stay involved with Canterbury cricket in whatever capacity she could.

MARTY KAIN STARS WITH BAT AND BALL IN VICTORY OVER OBC (31 Jan 11)

All-rounder Marty Kain, surprisingly left out of the Canterbury One Day side responded in spectacular fashion with a dominant performance against Old Boys Collegians, scoring a quick fire hundred and then taking taking 6-44 to wrap the game up with three overs left.

Good work Marty and here is the article from today's Press Newspaper

by Matt Richens...

Lancaster Park-Woolston have joined a logjam at the top of the premier grade two-day cricket competition thanks to Marty Kain's heroics on Saturday.

Kain scored his second senior century and grabbed six wickets as LPW beat Old Boys-Collegians by 27 runs to join St Albans and East Shirley – who drew – in the top three, separated by just 0.64 of a point.

Kain, not required for Canterbury duties this weekend, was clearly the standout of the four games on Saturday, scoring 100 before spinning LPW to victory taking 6-44 from 10.3 overs.

Park started their second innings 34 runs behind OBC, but Kain's aggressive century, off just 88 balls, and Shaun Coffey's 91 helped LPW through to 258-7 before they pulled out.

That left OBC 55 overs to score 225, but they had no answer to Kain and finished all out for 198. OBC had solid contributions from a few batsmen, but only Bill Walsh reached 50.

Three declarations set up a tense finish at Sydenham Park. Burnside-West University declared at 135-5 in their second innings leaving Sydenham 55 overs to score 212.

Opener Andrew McCracken carried his bat finishing on 106 as the home side reached the target with two balls to spare. McCracken was dropped four times – once before he had scored – as BWU continue to struggle in the field.

He hit 14 fours in his mammoth stay and combined with Sean Heather (62) to put on 133 for the fourth wicket. Scott Inglis was the best of the BWU bowlers, taking all five wickets.

Marist Harewood looked to be hanging on for a comfortable draw with three overs and three wickets in hand. But two wickets meant for a nervous final over before their match with Riccarton was drawn.

Marist-Harewood started the day on 65-4, still 117 behind with six first wickets in hand at Redwood Park.

Owen Babula took 5-52 as the home side were rolled for just 124, but Willie Lonsdale and Scott Radcliffe both took three wickets apiece to dismiss Riccarton for just 130 in their second innings.

That left Marist-Harewood 49 overs to score 189, but they finished the day 24 runs short. Jeff Case top-scored for the hosts with 86.

In search of the outright lead of the competition, both East Shirley and St Albans forfeited their first innings after a wet Hagley Park outfield ruined any chance of play last week. Saints were in trouble early as Ryan Burson celebrated his 100th senior two-day game for the club, taking the first five wickets.

But a late fightback from Saints, including 63 to opener Greg Dawson and unbeaten 46 to Matt Holstein allowed them to get to 173 before they were bowled out in the 65th over.

That left Easts 35 overs to win outright, but Michael Davidson ripped the heart out of their middle order as Easts fell from 40-1 to 45-5.

From there they limped through to the final over eight down. Jason Pawson, also in his 100th two-day game for the club, was dropped on the first ball of the final over and the game ended a draw as Easts finished at 105-8. Davidson took 5-19 from his 13 overs.

FRANKIE MAKES THE WHITE FERNS (27 Jan 11)

Our very own Frances 'Frankie' MacKay has been announced in the White Ferns team for the Rose Bowl series against Australia.

The series pits the Kiwi's in theee Twenty/20's and three One Day Internationals beginning in Invercargill on February the 18th.

Congratulations from all of us here at LPWCC.

HAIDEE TIFFEN RECEIVES NEW YEARS HONOUR (10Jan 11)

Recent LPW player Haidee Tiffen has received recognition in the New Years Honour's listings. The 31 year old Tiffen was awarded a Member of the Order of Merit in the list released on New Years Day.

Here is the article from the Press dated 01/01/11.

A passion for cricket has brought former New Zealand women's cricket captain Haidee Tiffen recognition in the New Year Honours List

The 31-year-old grew up in South Canterbury, and said she was humbled to receive the Member of the Order of Merit accolade.

"I'm incredibly humbled, and so proud to be a Kiwi, and to be recognised in this way.

"It's absolutely massive for a small-town girl from St Andrews to achieve such an honour."

Tiffen said her days in South Canterbury playing for Timaru Girls' High School and the senior women's representative side were ones she remembered fondly, and the recognition was thanks to the people of South Canterbury.

"A lot of thanks has to go to the people who have helped me.

"I'm still a South Canterbury girl, I have green and black blood in me and I always will have.

"The award is as much for me as it is for the community who helped me out, and I just want to say from me and my family, thank you to the people of South Canterbury."

Tiffen played 117 one-day internationals for her country, and since retiring after the Women's World Cup, in Australia, in 2009, has focused on her teaching career in Christchurch and turned to coaching.

She said to have received an honour which put her in the company of some of the greats of New Zealand women's cricket was an amazing feeling.

"It's really humbling to be put in the same class as Emily Drumm and Debbie Hockley, but wearing the silver fern and playing for my country, that was what I was so passionate about, that's all I ever wanted to do."

She got her first chance in the national team against the touring South Africans, in 1999, and over the next decade carved out a record which would see her become one of the most respected allrounders in the women's game.

Tiffen said she had enjoyed making the transition from player to coach, helping boys and girls develop their skills.

"(Canterbury Cricket chief executive Lee Germon) has given me an ambassador role with Canterbury cricket, and I'm loving my time as assistant coach of the Canterbury Magicians."

She said promoting the women's game would be her next focus.

"It's improving – we're getting more (women's games) on Sky (television), which I'm doing a bit of commentary on, so the game is being promoted and it gives young girls the chance to see what they can aspire to be."

ONE DAY SEMI FINAL RESULTS FOR PREMIER MEN AND 2A (14 Dec 10)

Sunday the 12th of December saw our Premier Men and 2A (Second Grade) teams take part in their respective semi finals to determine the finalists for their One Day Cup competitions.

The Premier Men had a criticial clash against Easts, as not only would the winner make the final, but as the other semi final had ineligible teams (Canterbury U20 and Canterbury Country), the winner would represent Canterbury in the National Club Champs to be held in Auckland in April.

Unfortunately we had a few of our lads away with representative committments, (both Canterbury and Buller), and we succombed to 117 chasing 177, with performances of note from Ryan McCone (3-35) and De'an Van Deventer (3-29)

Our 2A team had better luck though defeating Easts in a remarkable battiing performance. Batting first we ended our 50 overs at 254/0 with openers Danny Dowds and Ben Cameron (right) unbeaten on 119 and 109 respectively. In reply Easts made 213 with Nathan Smith taking 4-31.

Well done to both teams, who have fought hard in this tough competition and best of luck to the 2A's in their final early in the New Year.

FRANKIE STARS FOR CANTERBURY (13 Dec 10)

Frances 'Frankie' MacKay starred for Canterbury on the weekend scoring a record breaking 145 in the match against the Auckland Hearts. Well done Frankie...

Here is the article from the Press...

Frankie Mackay is a self-confessed cricket stats geek, but the 20-year-old Canterbury Magician had no idea of the significance of her huge innings on Saturday.

Mackay scored 145 for the Magicians as they went on to win their opening Action Cricket Cup 50-over game against the Auckland Hearts at Rangiora's MainPower Oval by 52 runs.

Her score surpassed the previous Canterbury women's domestic record of 141 by Debbie Hockley scored 12 seasons ago, also against Auckland in Rangiora, but at Dudley Park.

As well as the fourth highest score by a woman in domestic one-day cricket in New Zealand, Mackay's 145 is the third highest one-day innings by any Canterbury batter behind Blair Hartland's 160 and Michael Papps' 150.

Opening the innings for the Magicians, Mackay waltzed past her previous best of 78 not out, but said she was lucky enough not to get a case of nerves approaching her first domestic century.

She took 68 balls to reach her half century, but just 36 more to get to 100. Her last 45 runs took just 28 balls.

"Lucky it was just my day and I kept going," she said.

SEMI FINAL TO DECIDE WHO GOES TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPS (08 Dec 10)

This weekend (Sunday 12 December) features the semi finals of the Premier Men's One Day Competition. In one Semi Final, Canterbury Country take on the Canterbury U20 side, while in the other to be held at Garrick Park we face East Shirley.

Given that both Canterbury Country and the U20 side are ineligible for the Club National Championships to be held in April next year, this makes our game against Easts in effect 'The Final' and of utmost importance, as the winner will be the Canterbury Region representative and take on the top club sides from the other five major provinces.

So let's get down to Garrick and support Mac, Keryn and the lads as we take on the boys from Burwood.

FOOTNOTE: (13 Dec)
Unfortunately the boys went down to Easts in the semi, scoring only 117 in response to 178

RYAN MCCONE TAKES 5 WICKETS FOR THE WIZARDS (12 Nov 10)

LPW's Ryan McCone making his fifth appearance for Canterbury claimed his first five wicket against Auckland at QE2 last week. Adding to the hundred he scored in his debut game batting at number nine, it's fair to say Raz has made a useful start in his first class career.

Here is the article from the Press...

Ryan McCone made light of leading a novice new-ball bowling attack capturing a five-wicket bag in just his fifth first-class game and helping Canterbury claim first innings points against Auckland at the QEII Village Green in Christchurch yesterday.

With Hamish Bennett in India, Leighton Burtt off to Wellington, Chris Martin gone back to Auckland and Shane Bond retired, the Wizards' pace bowling stocks were depleted.

Add to that the loss of Richard Sherlock with a groin injury before the Auckland game and Canterbury looked suspect.

McCone, 23, made a mockery of that, using the new ball effectively to bag five for 46 from 17 overs and steer the Wizards into a dominant position after three days.

The lively left-armer has also made a first-class century on debut and could be forgiven for thinking the game was easy.

But McCone said he had played enough cricket to know that isn't the case.

"The success was very pleasing but I know there are plenty of days when things don't go for you. You just enjoy it when they do," he said.

McCone said the new ball seemed to swing and with a little variation in bounce he said the aim was just to bowl straight.

After knocking the top off the Auckland batting with two wickets in his first two overs, McCone returned yesterday with the second new ball to complete the job.

He dismissed centurymaker Anaru Kitchen and struck again two balls later getting the capable Andre Adams to have the Auckland innings sliding again.

McCone said he had worked hard during the off-season building up his lean frame and appears to have lifted his pace to create challenges at this level.

However, McCone was worried an abdominal muscle tear just before the club season began might set him right back.

"I missed a few games early on but luckily it came right pretty quickly."

McCone's efforts helped Canterbury secure a 146-run first innings lead which they then built on reaching 131 for three at stumps to be ahead by 277 overall with batsmen Michael Papps and Peter Fulton posting half centuries.

HAIDEE GETS NEW JOB WITH CANTERBURY CRICKET (02 September 10)

Ex Premier Women's Captain Haidee Tiffen has taken on a new role with Canterbury Cricket as the Canterbury Cricket's Womens Ambassador.

Well done to Haidee and all the best from of all us at LPWCC. Press report below...

In what is believed to be a first for New Zealand Cricket, former Canterbury Magicians and White Ferns captain Haidee Tiffen will take up a new role this season as the Canterbury Women’s Cricket Ambassador.

Tiffen announced her retirement from all forms of Cricket prior to the 2009/10 season in order to focus on her teaching career and further her tertiary education.

‘Canterbury Cricket has set measurable goals around the development of women’s and girls cricket in Canterbury. We intend to not only increase participation numbers but also increase the profile of the women’s arm of the sport in our region, especially considering Canterbury has enjoyed the greatest on field success of any Major Association. Having Haidee involved is a real coup for us. She has a universal appeal for cricketers from grassroots level right up to her old team mates in the Magicians and is also held with the highest regard at the international level’ said Canterbury Cricket CEO Lee Germon.

Although her playing days are now behind her Tiffen says the passion she has for women’s cricket, especially in Canterbury, has not gone and always hoped an opportunity would present itself where she can remain actively involved in the game she loves. ‘It was a hard decision to finish my career after more than a decade and I have really missed being a part of the Canterbury Cricket family this past year. When the opportunity was presented to me to become the first Women’s Cricket Ambassador it was really a no brainer. It is a fantastic initiative and shows a real focus on growing women’s cricket’ said Tiffen.

Tiffen debuted for the White Ferns during the 1998/99 season at the age of 19 against South Africa in Hamilton. She played in 117 One Day Internationals during the course of her career racking up 2919 runs including 18 half centuries and a high score of 100. As an all rounder she was called on to bowl in 44 of these matches taking 49 wickets at an average of 19.48 meaning she was acknowledged as one of the best women’s cricketers in the world during her career.

IT WAS A GOOD DAY... (27 Mar 10)

Well the last day of the season saw some teriffic performances, with President's comfortably accounting for Sydenham Hospital to win their grade. Electing to bat first Sydenham scored slowly throughout to end at 149/3 off their 40 overs. In reply all 5 batsmen contributed with Nathan Jones and Jeremy Styles putting on 38 for the first wicket before Nathan was first out for 21, soon after Jeremy was caught for 23.

We then saw a good partnership between Ellery Hurn and Ric Horsfall. El finished the game 30no and Ric made 42 before picking out the only fielder on the boundary, Scotty Wilson then finished the game with a effortless 20 no.

The other grade winner Aaron Reid's 2B side who had a truly remarkable victory, with Sam Baker bowling their number eleven batsman with the very last ball of the day. An incredible result and a great effort from Reido from what is almost an entirely new side.

Loyal club members Dayne Gardner and Aaron Reid (right) stuck with the club when upto nine of the team defected to play alongside a former club member just before the start of the season. Congratulations guys and your rewards are there for all to see.

In addition the Premier Men's side turned on a master class in batting playing on Garrick One made a mammoth 289-1, with Andrew Ellis making 149 and Keryn Ambler finishing unbeaten on 116.

It was a fantastic day and the celebrations went long into the night, and brought back memories of some great nights back in the old LPCC clubrooms in Stevens St.

PRESIDENT'S GRADE GOES DOWN TO THE WIRE (21 Mar 10)

After the games yesterday, President's Grade will be decided on the last day of the season. Going into Saturday's round we needed to win one of our last two games to secure the title.

Against a strong Old Boys Collegians side we struggled to contain them to 215 for 6 off their 40 overs with ex Canterbury first class batsman Ben Harris making a classy 57. Bowling for us the evergreen club coach Garry MacDonald (right) in his first game of the season, showed us that class is permanent with an excellent spell of 8 overs, 1 for 17.

We lost wickets early and then later unfortunately often in pairs, Nathan Jones and Ric Horsfall were rebuilding until Ric was given out LBW for 22, then Nathan and Scott Wilson looked to right the ship and were batting well until Nathan holed out for 34. Scott soon followed for another 30 odd, and it was looking like an early finish at 110/5, but Jamie Bennett and Garry Mac's partnership bought us right back into contention.

A well made 45 from Jamie and a useful 22 from Garry saw us reach 200, but again both persished in quick sucession and it was left to Steve Lynksey and Trevor Luke to see us home, both batted well (Steve 18 and Trevor 12*), but with two runs left to win off the last ball (one to tie, which would have been enough to win the title), Steve missed it and a bye was attempted, but to no avail.

With East Shirley Gold winning, we now have a slender 3 point advantage over the boys from Burwood going into the last round. We play Marist Harwood on Garrick 2 and Easts take our on conquerors from Saturday, Old Boys Collegians.

We look forward to the challenge.

MARIA HELPS WHITE FERNS TO TWENTY/20 CLEAN SWEEP OVER AUSSIES (24 Feb 10)

LPW player Maria Fahey was in fine form in the final match as the NZ White Ferns took the three match series 3-0. Opening the batting in her only game in the three match series Maria scored 42 off 45 balls, helping the White Ferns to a 7 run win.

The 3-0 series win was a complete turnaround from the 5-0 thrashing the Aussies dealt out in the One Day Series.

PARK BOYS FIRE BULLER TO WIN AGAINST RIVALS (10 Feb 10)

LPW Senior players Troy Scanlon and Andrew Duncan were in dominant form on the weekend as Buller took down their traditional rivals, the West Coast in the Hawke Cup.

Troy scored 124, and Andrew 101 in Buller's first innings of 493. In reply the Coast scored 193, with Andrew taking 2/1 with what I assume was his once much vaunted leg spin. But it was the second innings where he really shone taking 7/35 as the Coast collapsed to 94 all out.

Unfortuntately Marlborough got up against Nelson denying Buller of a rare Hawke Cup Challenge. Well done boys...

EMMA CAMPBELL AND MARIA FAHEY NAMED IN NZ WHITE FERNS (19 Jan 10)

Women's Club Captain Emma Campbell (right) has been named for the first time in the NZ White Ferns squad. The team will face Australia in the traditonal Rose Bowl Series in five clashes from Feb 10-18 in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Joining Emma is top order batsman Maria Fahey. Maria has had an extended break from the side due to a illness, but has fought her way back into the side.

Our congratulations to both of them.

Here is the article from the Press (NZPA)...

Leg spinner Erin Birmingham and all rounder Kate Broadmore have been promoted into the White Ferns' Twenty20 cricket squad to play Australia after fine performances during last month's emerging players tour across the Tasman.

For the one-day international Rose Bowl series against Australia, the national selectors of coach Gary Stead, Penny Kinsella and Bruce Blair have picked a mix of experience and youth for the side.

The debutantes in the ODI side are Emma Campbell, a leg spinner, Natalie Dodd, a top order batsman and Morna Nielsen, a left arm spinner.

"All three players have been watched carefully over the season and all three could make an immediate impact in the upcoming series," Stead said today.

"The selection panel believe it is important to start integrating players into the White Ferns who could play a significant part in the next World Cup.

"We believe we have some very exciting young players who will stand up to the test of international cricket against Australia."

The ODI team also features the recall of Maria Fahey after a two-year lay off from international cricket with illness.

The five-match ODI series will be played from February 10-18 in Adelaide and Melbourne .

Rachel Priest and Lucy Doolan have not been selected for this leg of the tour due to injuries and rehabilitation. They will need to pass fitness tests to confirm their places for the Twenty20 series.

Previous White Fern, Sarah Tsukigawa is unavailable and Suzie Bates, will miss the ODI segment because of commitments with the Logan Thunder team in the Australian women's National Basketball League.

"The (ODI) team have 10 players with World Cup final experience from 2009 and we will be learning from some of our past mistakes in trying to become a more consistent and complete team," Stead said.

White Ferns captain Aimee Watkins said the five new players have had good seasons for their provinces and fully deserve their national call-up. Four of the five players were also on the recent emerging players tour to Australia.

"These are players that we feel have the potential to be real stars in the future," she said. "At the moment we are rebuilding with a view to the 2013 World Cup.

"We obviously want to win every game we play, but now is a good time to bring fresh talent into the team. There is no better place to test yourself than against Australia in Australia."

The Twenty20 series will be played from February 21-28.

The White Ferns will play three of the five matches against Australia as double-header games on both sides of the Tasman -- before the Black Caps take one Australia in Christchurch and Wellington and before the Australia-West Indies match in Hobart. The remaining two matches will also be played in Hobart.

PREMIER MEN RUNNERS UP IN THE 20/20 COMPETITION (17 Nov 09)

Congratulations (and commiserations) to the Premier Men who lost a closely fought final against Riccarton on Sunday.

After wins against against Marist Harewood and East Shirley on Saturday, we were in the final to be held the following day against Riccarton. Needing 9 off the last over, Riccarton's Chris Mugford hit the winning runs early in the over.

Below is an report from the Press from Monday 16th newspaper...

A six struck by Chris Mugford, which was almost caught on the boundary, handed Riccarton the premier grade Twenty20 cricket title against Lancaster Park-Woolston in the final at Hagley Oval yesterday.

Riccarton required nine runs from the final over in pursuit of LPW's 108 for seven when Mugford laid into a low full toss from Ryan McCone that was clasped, then lost, over the line by the luckless boundary rider.

That enabled Riccarton to clinch the title with two balls to spare and complete the two-day tournament unbeaten.

Riccarton had earlier been well served by a crisply-struck 52 from opener Iain Robertson from 47 balls, with six fours and a six, to lay the foundation for the run chase.

But his dismissal to medium pacer Troy Scanlon and a tidy penultimate over from LPW's import, Namibian cricketer Gerry Snyman, still left nine needed.

Apart from his unbeaten 17 from 15 balls, the experienced Mugford was a key performer for Riccarton, claiming two wickets at modest cost from his four overs when LPW batted.

While a number of LPW players posted double figures, only the dependable James Winstanley passed 20 to give the side a defendable tally.

Winstanley backed that up with three wickets on a wicket that suited his medium-slow deliveries.

A feature of one of the section matches was the six catches taken by Burnside-West University wicketkeeper Tom Latham in his team's match against Sydenham while the St Albans and East-Shirley encounter was tied.

The women's final was won by East-Shirley whose powerful batting lineup, including White Ferns Kate Pulford and Sara McGlashan, overcame St Albans by 36 runs in the final.

East-Shirley was unbeaten from four matches although they were more extended by St Albans in the round-robin match, which it won by just five runs.

VERSATILE BUILDINGS NAMED AS MAJOR SPONSOR (09 Oct 09)

Versatile Building have been named as the Major Sponsor for the 2009-10 season for the LPW Premier Women's team. We are greatly appreciate of their support and wish Frankie and the girls all the best for the season.

Please find the Press Release from Versatile below...

VERSATILE SUPPORTING CRICKET IN CHRISTCHURCH

Versatile Christchurch is throwing its support behind the Lancaster Park Woolston Premier Women’s cricket team as it heads into the 2009/10 season. Versatile Christchurch is the new official sponsor of the team, providing support to the club and funding for the team’s uniforms and practice gear.

Versatile Christchurch manager Ric Horsfall says the company is pleased to be able to support an organisation that provides so much to the sport and the local community.

“We wanted to get behind a club – and a team – that has put a great deal of time and energy into the local area, recognising not only their sporting successes but the investment they have made into training, coaching and supporting kids in the Woolston area,” says Ric Horsfall.

“At a time when community trust funding is getting very restricted, we believe it’s up to local companies like Versatile to ‘step up to the crease’ in support of our teams.”

Mr Horsfall says the Lancaster Park Woolston (LPW) Premier Women’s cricket team is a fantastic example of the quality of women’s sport in New Zealand.

“The premier women’s team has won several one day and 20/20 trophy matches, and produced a number of first class representative players.  We are excited to be playing a part in what we hope will be a successful season for the team and a great year for the development of more excellent women cricketers,” says Mr Horsfall.

LPW Women’s Premier captain, Frances Mackay, says the side is grateful for all the assistance it has received, and will be working hard to achieve the goals it has for the season ahead, including introducing new talent to the side.

“We have new young players coming through who are showing a lot of potential. Even though we are without some of our standout players, we know we will surprise some teams and play some great cricket,” she says.

“This year brings a fresh start for the team, with a new management structure and captain in place, and now some great new clothing. We are very appreciative of all the support we have received and are looking forward to another successful year.”

Emma Campbell has been a vital part of the LPW side for  several seasons. A highly competent leg spin bowler, she was last season’s State League leading wicket taker, and her great results in both club and representative cricket have seen her included in the White Ferns winter squad.

Current New Zealand representative Maria Fahey has been welcomed back into the LPW and Canterbury Wizards teams for this season. Last season, she recorded the highest women’s score with 95no and scored the most runs for the season with 470 at an average of over 60.

They are joined by last year’s LPW women’s all-rounder and player of the year, and new captain, Frances Mackay. Frances is the opening batsman for both LPW and the Canterbury Magicians, and her form has also seen her named in the current White Ferns squad.

Among the new team members ready to make their mark is young up-and-coming player, and Otago Sparks member, Lucy Foote.

“Lucy has great potential and this seasoon will be looking to become a more dominant force for LPW,” says Ms Mackay.

“Local cricket is something Versatile is very much a part of – from the backyard games played against a Versatile garage or behind a Versatile home, to our support of local clubs,” says Ric Horsfall.

“It is shaping up to be a great summer and we encourage the local community to get out and support the team – as much as they’ve been supporting them.”

BAXENDALE WINS LEAGUE GRAND FINAL (05 Oct 09)

Premier Men's all rounder James Baxendale came off the bench to help the Canterbury Bulls beat Auckland in the Nationa Provincial Premiership (NPP) final at Rugby League Park in Christchurch on Sunday.

Well done Baxy from all of us at LPW.

The Press article below regarding James and his dad, Ray who played for Canterbury as well as 16 times for the Kiwi's was published on Friday 03 Oct.

Two Baxendale back-rowers have already had two special father-and-son moments this representative rugby league season.

They have their sights set on a third – if the Canterbury Bulls beat Auckland in tomorrow's National Provincial Premiership (NPP) grand final.

James, 23, is a Canterbury Bulls second-rower – the position his father, Ray, played in 36 matches, including 16 tests for the Kiwis between 1975 and 1981.

It was a heartfelt time for both men when Ray was called forward to present James with his red-and-black jersey at the Bulls season launch.

"It's one of those father-son moments that I'll always treasure," said Ray, who also appreciated being invited into the Hornby dressing room after James' club team won this year's premiership grand final.

"Hopefully, it will be the same on Sunday," he said.

Ray, a West Coaster who played his last two club seasons in Christchurch with Marist-Western Suburbs, retired with a knee injury at 26 – five years before James was born.

But he and wife Donna have "had a helluva lot of fun" following James' sport over the years.

James is a double Canterbury representative. An able off-spinner and middle order batsman for the Lancaster Park-Woolston club, the all-rounder had one Twenty20 game for Canterbury "about three years ago".

He played first XV rugby as a centre at St Thomas of Canterbury College but returned to his lifelong football love, league, for Hornby. "I had one game for the Bulls but I went over to England in our winter in 2007 to play cricket in Wigan, a league centre," James said. "I came back last year and played for Hornby but I was injured for quite a lot of it."

James, an accomplished goalkicker, was one of Hornby's best as the Panthers claimed another club crown this season and earned a Bulls recall.

The Baxendales may play in the same numbered jersey but the role has changed since Ray's heyday. "The second-rowers are spread out wide now. We used to be directly behind the prop and take the ball up after him."

But James, who will start on the interchange bench, has a chance to do something his dad never quite achieved: win a national title. "We [the West Coast] got to the final in '78 or '79," Ray said.

"We had to go up to Auckland but we were pretty soundly beaten by 15 to 20 points."

PRESSIES HAVE A PRE-SEASON TRIP (03 Oct 09)

Yes, you read right the elder statesmen of the club undertook a 4 day trip to Blenheim to play two pre-season fixtures, in among wine tasting, golf, and fishing trips of course.

Organised by Paul Bennett and Simon Patchett 23 of the team (including some partners) were due to play a Marlborough Development team at Horton Park on Thursday 01 October, however recent inclement weather meant the game was abandoned without a ball bowled.

The Saturday fixture saw the team take on the Marlborough 2nd XI. The 40 over fixture had the hosts batting first, recovering from 99/7 to post 216/9 with Scotty Wilson taking 5-24, unfortunately the Pressies never threatened in being dismissed for 124, with only Mark Chamberlain 35, Simon Patchett 25, and Paul Bennett 24* getting past twenty.

GERRIE SNYMAN COMPARED TO CAIRNS (29 Sep 09)
This season we have appointed Namibian International Gerrie Snyman as the Club's Professional. Gerrie arrives a week or two into the season and we look forward to his contributions. Here is an article from The Press by Geoff Longeley re Gerrie and LPW coach Garry Mac's thoughts on him.

Namibian all-rounder Gerrie Snyman, who is described as being in a similar mould of cricketer to Chris Cairns, will play for Lancaster Park-Woolston in the Canterbury club competition this season.

Snyman, 28, is a destructive batsman and brisk pace bowler who reminded returning Park-Woolston coach Garry MacDonald of Cairns, a former LPW player.

"He's got that ability to take an attack apart so it will be interesting to see how he goes," MacDonald said.

In a match against United Arab Emirates in 2007, Snyman struck a world record 17 sixes in a single one-day innings on his way to 196 from 113 balls.

Against Kenya in the Intercontinental Cup competition last year he registered his maiden first-class century in similarly aggressive fashion. Snyman made 230 from 201 balls with 11 sixes. His innings comprised 82 per cent of Namibia's tally of 282. The next highest scorer made just 13.

MacDonald said Namibia had been knocked out of World Cup contention so Snyman was a free agent who did not take much persuading to play in Christchurch.

He is well travelled having already played in South Africa, Australia and England at league level. His first-class figures are healthy with 1694 runs at 49.82 and 41 wickets at 29.90.

MacDonald came across Snyman who was playing in the Dutch league. MacDonald has just returned from a highly successful season in the league, guiding his Rood-Wit (Red and White) team to the premier division (Hoffclasse).
