FROM MESSAGE
Paul Bennett
(08 August 2011)

Just a quick note to let people know at LPWCC that on the opening day of cricket week for our sister club Cockfosters CC there were six representatives of our club playing for and against each other.

For Cockfosters we were represented by Mark Reid and  Jono Bennett while the Pressie’s had Marty Kain, Michael Davidson, Troy Scanlon and Ryan Mc Cone, a fairly useful line up!

No idea as to the result yet but $$ might just be on the Pressies side!

Aka "the Apprentice".

Greetings from ex Cockfosters player 80s vintage. Toured NZ in 1990. Now living in Kent (south east England). Glad to hear that Paul B still moaning, that Lukey has become a elder statesman  and that John Quinn's looks haven't improved.

Bottle of Grolsh for you all.

Wow, sorry ... Bit behind the times.

It saddens me to read about Possums passing. Always good to have a drink with & talk cricket. From the simple advice of saying to me, "just watch the ball!", to making Ashley & me roll the pitch between innings before going out to open the batting. "Appreciation" I think he called it.

A real character, all clubs need them. and I will say I had the pleasure of seeing "The moon ball" get a wicket." The poor batsman lol.

You will be missed Possum, thanks for the great memories! RIP

We at Cockfosters are sad to hear of the recent      earthquake and send our best wishes to all members and their families at LPWCC
------------------------------------------------------------------------On behalf of Cockfosters CC we would like to express our condolences to the Calder family on the sad passing of Ross and also to our Sister Club LPWCC.  We have fond memories of Ross, when he spent the season with us in 1986 - a fine batsman able to mix it with the best.  We also remember the 'tweakers' he used to bowl.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news about Possum. He played with us at Cockfosters in1986 and will be remembered here with affection as a loyal club man.

He was someone I always looked forward to catching up with on my trips to NZ and it is sad to think that he will no longer be around to tell me what is wrong with English cricket.

I first meet Poss as a young cricketer finding their feet in seniors. My first games with Poss were on the famous Nelson trip with Cockfosters NZ where Poss and Rangi made the trip bloody entertaining and very unforgettable for all invloved.

Playing with Poss was likewise an "experience" from him bowling medium pace when asked to bowl leg spin (or moon bowling) or bowling leg spin when asked to bowl mediums.

He was always his own man with his own views on cricket and how it should be played.

A unique cricketer and one that will be missed.

RIP Poss

So sad to hear of Ross' death. I remember playing cricket with him when he got nicknamed Possum, when he hit Dennis Aberhart over the Riccarton pavillion in a season, when he was the leading runscorer in Premier cricket, putting on a 174 run partnership undefeated with him to beat Old Boys in Presidents to win by 9 wickets (whistling most of the time and admiring his own shots), of his always complaining about the small size of the portions when eating out and complaining when I would chip in at least once during a round of golf with him, when he filled his car with $2 of petrol to get home
from a party in Leeston and of him generally having an
alternative view to most people.

A unique character!

RIP Ross.

I struggled to believe the news when I heard that Ross (Possum) Calder had passed away. Unfortunately since I havent played for the club in about 4 years I hadn’t seen Poss for a while, but I have very fond & strong memories of the man.

I think it was in the early 90's when Poss came back into the Mens Senior side as lower order batsman & leg spin bowler. I would have been in my early 20's & enjoyed a few partnerships with him in the middle.

Poss would often have interesting things to say during our mid pitch chats we would have in between overs!!! I was always in awe of the stories that Poss had from his "glory days" when he was one of the leading batsmen around town. Poss was always great to have a beer (or a whiskey) & a chat with after a days play - he could talk the ear off anyone!!!

Here's to you Poss - it was an absolute pleasure to know you. It is a very sad loss but may you rest in peace.

Possum "Moon Ball" Calder, sad to hear the news that he past away this week. As youngster playing cricket I have many great memories of playing cricket with Possum. I'll never forget and I have never let him forget the day he got hit for 32 off one over bowling what he called his "Moon Ball".

I always gave him stick about it but he still bowled and rated it as his wicket taking ball. When I first started playing morning cricket Possum was the captain of second grade he helped me progress to Seniors.

I will certainly miss Possum this season as he was a welcome member of our Pressie social team. RIP Ross.

My heartfelt condolences to the Calder family for their loss. Possum was a hugely important member of our team and he will be sadly missed.

He will be remembered for his dedication, passion for 2 day cricket and dry sense of humour. His input and guidance is something I will never forget and his legacy will live on.

Rest in Peace Poss.

All our thoughts are with Possum's family during this difficult time. I remember playing many games with Poss, and recall his unique batting style and his safe hands at first slip.

He will be missed around our club.

I'd encourage other club members and those in the greater cricket community to leave their thoughts of Possum on this message board.

A big hello to all Lancaster Park players of 1981 and 1991 vintages who remember an (ex) Cockfosters cricket club tourist. Now living in Cornwall in south west England.

Is there anyone in the club who could offer our new pommie boy any sort of work while he is playing for us throughout the season. 21 years of age, doing or has just finished a degree at Durham. He is happy to do virtually anything within reason! He arrives Christchurch 25th September. Best contact me before then on 331- 6024 or spiceisles@clear.net.nz

Cheers
